SmartSite integration promotes a service-based model for designing and implementing a distributed network and a fully deployed SmartSite divides network components into five broad categories: Client, Interface, Application, Transaction and Storage.

Client

SmartSite is a cross-platform solution that can deliver services to Windows PCs, Apple Macintosh and UNIX/Linux systems, as well as PDAs and web-enabled cell-phones. Support for wired connections (LAN and WAN), wireless connections (WAP) and public Internet connections (Extranet and VPN) allow SmartSite users to securely access those services around the world.

Interface

SmartSite solutions use a familiar Web User Interface (WUI) to improve delivery and ensure network services are delivered to the user in one unified interface – regardless of how or where they connect. This increases productivity by providing users with instant access to tools and relevant information.

Application

SmartSite simplifies application and services deployment with a modular architecture that provides high-level interfaces for collaboration, communication, security and directory services. Win32 applications (via Citrix MetaFrame), UNIX apps and web-enabled tools are all supported.

Transaction

A great number of network services – backend database servers, backup servers, network monitors and gateways – occur behind the scenes, transparent to the user. SmartSite improves communications between these servers and evenly distributes network load, which provides better performance, the ability to support more concurrent users and increased scalability.

Storage

Centralized storage is a key component of SmartSite, providing administrators with the ability to expand storage, link to storage on other devices and logically move terabytes of data in seconds without disrupting network service. When combined with load-balancing and SmartSite’s on-demand server (which allows users to swap services and applications with only a few key strokes), network services are greatly improved.
